After a year of incubation, BeSpoon was born in March 2010 with one goal: to be the best-in-class indoor positioning Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) provider. The team was looking for a location-tracking chip with very high accuracy and a high refresh rate, that could operate in a noisy environment. We reviewed all the technologies available and could not find anything that would meet the requirements.
We took a deeper look into the problem and realized that high-accuracy positioning was a real challenge. The best way to measure a distance between two transceivers is to measure the time it takes for an electromagnetic signal to perform a round trip, and multiply by the speed of light. Computing a distance with a few centimeters accuracy requires time measurement in picoseconds!
At CEA-LETI, we found people able to frame a signal within 125ps. That is about the time it takes for the light to travel 3.75cm. Moreover, their concept was clever enough to work at very low clock rates, avoiding the usual power drain of high speed processing. We were amazed. We set up a joint lab to co-design a unique chip with incredible performance that could be integrated smoothly into any consumer device. And we succeeded! We managed to squeeze within a few square millimeters of silicon all it takes to accurately monitor distances between items or individuals. Since then, our systems have been tracking daily forklifts, trolleys, drones, athletes and even bats!

CO-founder and CEO
Jean-Marie has more than 20 years’ experience in consumer electronics and the communications industry. He was fortunate enough to start designing GSM phones in 1994 and to witness the evolution of this industry until 2009, when Myriad acquired Purple Labs, the designing company he had co-founded in 2001. Serving as Purple Labs COO involved raising funds, acquiring customers, managing roadmaps and ambitious projects, etc. Jean-Marie holds a Master of Science from ISIAL with a major in artificial intelligence.
Co-founder and CTO
Pascal has 20 years of experience in mobile communications and specializing in radio architecture. He designed several generations of cellular radios and was the lead integrator on several radio chipsets. Pascal was also part of the founding team of Purple Labs and served as Engineering Director until the acquisition by Myriad. Pascal graduated from Paris ESIEE with a Master’s degree, majoring in radio technology.
Philippe joined the team during the Purple Labs days, in 2004, where he was in charge of driver development. Among others, he pioneered the use of gyroscopes and was instrumental in the adoption of Linux in smartphones. Philippe joined BeSpoon soon after its inception. Philippe holds an MSc from nearby Savoie university with a major in software engineering.
Franck also joined us in 2004 when he was hired at Purple Labs to handle radio development. Franck was involved in the integration of new radio capabilities into the phone: from 3G to GPS and Wifi. He anticipated and implemented several generations of radio technology until he realized the importance of ultra-wideband and joined BeSpoon in its early days. Franck has earned a degree from ISEN in Toulon with a major in radio frequency.
